Myth

The more frequent seismic activity in the Eastern Mediterranean region and in the Aegean may be affected by climate change or specific weather events.

Fact

Seismic tremors in the Eastern Mediterranean region and in the Aegean have been an increasingly frequent phenomenon lately. We know that due to the geomorphology of the area earthquakes existed and may exist in the future. However, Geophysicist Paul Lundgren of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says “It is very exciting to be able to find possible links between earthquakes and climate, such as seasonal differences. The challenge, however, is to square such connections with fundamental physics. We are not close to being able to predict when an earthquake may occur as a result of climate change.”

Myth

Climate protests are dangerous and irresponsible. A viral picture by Australian Youth Coal Coalition on Facebook shows the mess climate change protesters created in Hyde park after a demonstration in Sep 2019.

Fact

The picture in question is not from a climate demonstration, but comes from a marijuana festival held in London’s Hyde Park in April 2019.
